battery backup

Battery backup is the fastest-growing segment in home power. The technology has gotten dramatically better in the last three years. Prices are coming down. And for certain situations, a battery system is genuinely better than a generator.

But batteries have real limitations that the marketing glosses over. They store a finite amount of energy. They can't run your whole house for days. And the cost math doesn't always work out the way the brochures suggest.

I run both a battery system and a standby generator. Here's what I've learned about when each one makes sense.

Where to start

If you're trying to decide between a generator and a battery, start with generator vs battery backup. If you've already decided on batteries, go to best home battery backup.

My take

If you live in an area with short, infrequent outages and you already have solar panels, a battery system is a great fit. If you're on well water, live in a rural area with extended outages, or need to run your whole house, you need a generator. If you can afford both, get both. That's what I did, and it's the setup I'd recommend to anyone who's serious about energy independence.
