generators

A generator is the most reliable way to keep your house running when the grid goes down. Not the cheapest. Not the simplest. But when the power's been out for three days and your neighbors are checking into hotels, you'll be glad you have one.

I've tested standby generators from Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, and Champion. I've run portable generators on gasoline, propane, and dual-fuel setups. Here's everything I've learned, organized so you can find what you need.

Where to start

If you're new to this, start with what size generator do I need. Size comes before brand. Get the size wrong and nothing else matters.

My take

If you can afford a standby generator, get one. A portable is better than nothing, but a permanently installed standby unit with an automatic transfer switch means you don't have to be home when the power goes out. It just handles it. That peace of mind is worth the price difference for most homeowners.
